Thinking of Li Bai on a Spring Day (translation)

Around the year  746/747, the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Ju Yi was missing his friend and fellow poet, Li Bai.  He wrote this poem in praise of Li Bai’s work and expressed his fond memories of their time past.

Thinking of Li Bai on a Spring Day by Bai Ju Yi

There is no rival to Bai’s poetry

Peerless and singular he prevails

Fresher than the work of Yu Xin*

More elegant than that of Bao Zhao*

Here in Wei Bei I see the trees greeting spring

As there in Jiang Dong the dusk brings clouds

When will we share another bottle of wine

And once again discuss our work together
