At an Old Friend’s Grave by Ma Dai (translation)

Ma Dai (799 -869) was a Tang Dynasty poet whose work was included in the famous anthology Three Hundred Tang Poems of the eighteenth century.

At an Old Friend’s Grave by Ma Dai

I remember your burial like yesterday

The tree by your grave has grown tall

Knowing of those who will follow you

All efforts by every man will be in vain
