On the Bus – The New Pacifier

Her mum says, to no one in particular,

she’s only just started having these mini tantrums…she likes to look at the pictures…and she’s just tired

She hands over the mobile phone; the child stops screaming and swipes her finger across the screen until she sees something she didn’t like and starts screaming again.  This time her mum speaks to her,

no, no, now that’s bad behavior

She gives the child a bottle of milk.  The child hurls it back at her.  She resets the phone quickly and hands it back.  The earlier scene repeats: swipes, screams, resets; swipes, screams, resets.  Her mum looks around while we all try to look elsewhere.

It’s only a few more stops…

I get off.

Poor kiddie. Probably hungry. And poor everyone on the bus, not knowing what to do and not having any peace! I see this sometimes on the subway, and sometimes, some kiddie-wise person intervenes with a new distraction and things calm, but it’s always loaded, because the parent is always feeling at the end of the tether and embarrassed or maybe affronted by the intervention.

Yes, sometime I get a curt ‘no’ from the parents and other times a thank you from other passengers when I’ve successfully distracted a screaming child. This one was determined to get the smart phone or else. :)

Well, it is quite difficult to get your child to not scream all the time, i always feel sorry for moms & dads with crying childs in public and with all the people commenting or looking at them with an annoyed face XD
