I have been admiring the photographs of chrysanthemums posted by northern hemisphere bloggers. Chrysanthemums are the Chinese symbol of Autumn but here in Sydney, it is near Spring. Already there are leaf buds on deciduous trees and I am thinking of the blossoms of Prunus, the Chinese symbol for Spring.
This is my translation of a poem by the Song 宋Dynasty poet 王安石Wang Anshi. My reading is in Cantonese.
At the corner of the garden walls
On the branches of a plum tree
Flowering alone against the cold
I see blossoms from afar and
Know it is not snow
For thence came that subtle fragrance
