I Can’t Sleep

Each night I listen to the rain

of macadamia nuts on my roof

as the possum leaves his dray*

and lands with a thud

on my roof

Last night he landed

where the neighbours’

new cat sat

Tonight I listen for the rain

staring at my ceiling

the silence is deafening

I can’t sleep

*a dray is a possum’s nest

As annoying as they are, they are such a part of being in Australia.
Each night my roof, electricity wires, trees and hedgerows become the equivalent of a possum highway….if only I could set up a toll booth to charge them :-)
