Earth Hour

Sydney was invited to dim its lights tonight

some did some didn’t

At the hour Didi and I were on the Harbour

riding a ferry to Circular Quay

At Hayes Street Wharf

a boy was booted off by the skipper

for bad behaviour

and the rabble of boys

back from the Head of the River

suddenly turned quiet

There were

kids with candles in one hand and

ice creams in the other

happy vendors of both

photographers who lined up tripods

to record the moment

that didn’t happen

and lovers who came to mooch in the dark

mooched on anyway and

in a way

I was glad to see it
